• Provides information and referral service to various programs.

• Emergency funds available to help with rent and utilities; must attend budgeting class. May have transportation or other funds occasionally.
• Provides clinical counseling services.

Division of Family Services (DFS)-must apply in county of residence
Buchanan County: 525 Jules St., St. Joseph, MO  (816) 387-2000

• In Missouri, DFS manages application for Medicaid, which provides coverage for doctor, hospital and approved medications. DFS also manages the Food Stamp program, energy assistance program, general relief and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families programs.
• In Kansas, Social and Rehabilitation Services manages similar services for Kansas residents.

• Emergency utility assistance, housing and family support services.
• Information and referral; volunteer services.

Interfaith Community Services: 1412 N. 3^rd, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 232-8080

• Provides Senior Meals Program, mobile meals, food pantry and clothes, in home care, personal care services, respite care, homemaker services, financial counseling and a variety of educational/social activities.
• May provide some rent or utility assistance. Also provides financial counseling to seniors.
• Provides assistance to elderly and disabled in filling out federal and state tax forms.

• Disaster relief; health-related education and safety classes.
• Information and referral.

• Provides 24-hour shelter for men, women and families.

• State agency that provides services and support to individuals with developmental disabilities and mental retardation. 
• Provides activities to promote independence and integration into the community.

American Cancer Society: 902 Riverside, St. Joseph, MO  (816) 271-7657 or 1-800-227-2345

• Assists with mileage reimbursement, nutritional supplement, support programs, educational materials, ostomy supplies, wigs, dressings and transportation. Must have cancer diagnosis; physician approval required for some items.

Bureau of Special Health Care Needs: Cameron, MO (816) 632-2107

• Provides medical needs for persons 21-years and younger with certain health conditions. Must meet income and diagnoses guidelines.
• Also provides assistance for adults in locating, coordinating, and purchasing rehabilitation and psychological services for individuals who have survived a traumatic brain injury.

Department of Health and Senior Services: 525 Jules, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 387-2100

• State agency that investigates all allegations of abuse/neglect of elderly.
• Provides home services (homemaker, personal care, respite) for people over age 60 or disabled. Must meet eligibility requirements (financial need).
• Offers information and referral services. Operates program to get appropriate services to current and potential Medicaid recipients considering nursing home placement.

Family Guidance Center for Behavioral Health: 510 Francis, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 364-1501

• Provides psychiatrists, medication management, counseling and caseworkers for people with mental illness.
• Alcohol and drug assessment, detoxification; inpatient and intensive outpatient treatment for alcohol/drug dependency.
• Family Guidance also provides some funds for prescriptions (average maximum assistance is $50).
• Has satellite offices in Maryville and Cameron, MO. 

Heartland Free Service: 5325 Faraon, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 271-6450

• Inpatient services provided without charge to patients who meet income/poverty guidelines. Does not cover outpatient medications or physician services.  

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: 6811 W. 63rd St., Shawnee Mission, KS 1-800-256-1075

• Provides supplementary funding for drugs, transfusions, testing, transportation, etc. to people with leukemia, lymphomas, multiple myelomas and Hodgkin's Disease.

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (MO):  800-374-2138.

• Provides information, helpline, family education relating to serious mental illness for children and adults.

National Children's Cancer Society: 1015 Locust, St. Louis, MO 1-800-5-FAMILY

• Assistance is provided for bone marrow transplant, donor harvest, supplies, respite care, home health care, pharmaceuticals, donor search, transportation, insurance premiums. Applications are available at the Heartland Cancer Center.

Social Welfare Board: 904 S. 10^th, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 233-5188 (serves St. Joseph/Buchanan County)

• Free health clinic for low-income people without insurance; fills the medical and dental care gaps that Medicare/Medicaid do not cover. May assist with medications in limited way.
• Crisis and diet counseling. AIDS coordinator.
• Women's clinic.

GENERAL RESOURCES:

• Only in Humbolt, Webster, Lindbergh, Pershing, Robidoux and Lafayette schools in St. Joseph, MO. Call the school. Funds may be available to help families in emergencies.

Community Leaders Assisting the Insured of Missouri: 800-390-3330.

• Counseling to seniors and disabled for Medicare insurance questions and claims. 
• Provides information regarding Medicare benefits, and compares Medicare supplemental insurance policies. In Kansas, call the Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas at 800-883-2549.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service: 3115 Ashland Ave., St. Joseph, MO, (816) 364-3337

• Counsels people 18-years and older concerning debt problems, buying on credit and money management. Especially helpful in directly intervening to arrange a payment plan for overdue bills such as medical, utilities, etc.

Division of Senior Services: 525 Jules, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 387-2100

• For people 60-years and older or disabled.  Provides homemaker/personal care services, as well as State programs (e.g. Missouri Care Options, elder abuse/neglect, information and referral).
• In Kansas, contact the Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging, at (785) 742-7152.

Legal Aid Of Western Missouri: 7th and Felix, St. Joseph, MO; (816) 364-2325 or 800-892-2101

• Provides free services to qualifying individuals in civil disputes, such as domestic violence, divorce, landlord-tenant, disability and other issues.
• Must meet income guidelines.
• A separate service, through the Missouri Bar Lawyer Referral Service, finds an attorney that will provide a 30 minute consultation for $25. Call 800-392-8777.

Midland Empire Resources for Independent Living: 4420 S. 20^th, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 279-8558

• Assists with resources for people with disabilities.

Social Security Administration: 2921 Belt, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 233-2511

• Provides access to federal programs of social security retirement and Medicare for those at age 65. May apply for Medicare Part B as a purchased service.
• Provides access to federal disability benefits and supplemental security income (SSI).
• Provides benefits on federal programs and qualifications.

• Assistance with application for veteran's benefits; inpatient and outpatient including medications.

Vocational Rehabilitation: 525 Jules, St. Joseph, MO, (816) 387-2280

• Missouri program offering assessment, training and assistance to allow a return to employment.
• Provides some assistance including medications when it will enable a person to go to or return to work.
