When to make a doctor’s appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Worsening
  • Continues every day for more than a few weeks
  • Only occurs in one area of the breast
  • Interferes with daily activities

Self-care

Daily use of a firm support bra and wearing a sports bra during exercise may help. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can ease pain.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Accompanied by redness or warmth
  • A lump is present
